Human beings tend to identify their own group as righteous and any group that opposes them as evil. If others were not evil we would assume that no conflict would exist. The ideology of war is predicated on the assumption that our “good” is threatened by their “evil” and war will end this evil. We the righteous nation will overcome the evil of the unrighteous nation. All one has to do is revisit the rhetoric of the recent past regarding the Persian Gulf to hear this message preached. We hold to our beliefs with passion and conviction and when our passion and conviction is put up against equal passion and conviction found in other cultures, religions, and politics, violence is the inevitable result. One of the most popular tunes of World War II encapsulates this so well… “Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition.” Religious motivation and spiritual reward are requirements to get people to the place where abusing or even killing someone is readily enjoined…especially when one’s life is at equal risk. When applied within the domestic scene to those of opposing wings of politics, alternative sexual orientations, differing skin colors, or differing economic classes, the Kingdom of God is tossed out of the arena and various forms of alternative weaponry are embraced…often times sadly enough, in the name of God.
